Can't connect Hyper-V Manager (on Windows Server 2012 R2) and Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
If you are unable to connect Hyper-V Manager on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a remote Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, there are several potential reasons for the issue. Here are some common troubleshooting steps to resolve the connection problem:
Network Connectivity: Ensure that both the Hyper-V Manager host (Windows Server 2012 R2) and the remote Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 have proper network connectivity. Verify that they can communicate with each other over the network.
Firewall Settings: Check the firewall settings on both the Hyper-V Manager host and the remote Hyper-V Server. The necessary ports must be open to allow Hyper-V Manager to communicate with the remote server.
On the Hyper-V Manager host, ensure that the necessary Windows Firewall rules are enabled for Hyper-V management. You can do this by running the following command in an elevated Command Prompt:
bashnetsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Hyper-V Management" new enable=yes
On the remote Hyper-V Server, make sure that the "Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-In)" and "Hyper-V Management Clients (TCP-In)" rules are enabled in the Windows Firewall.
Network Profile: Verify that the network profile of both the Hyper-V Manager host and the remote Hyper-V Server is set to "Private" or "Domain." If the network profile is set to "Public," certain services and features might be blocked.
Hyper-V Remote Management Configuration: On the Hyper-V Server, ensure that the Hyper-V Remote Management feature is enabled. Open the "Hyper-V Manager" on the remote server, go to "Hyper-V Settings," and under the "Server" section, enable "Enable Remote Management."
Hyper-V Management Interface: Check that the network interface used by Hyper-V Management is correct. Ensure that the appropriate network interface is selected for Hyper-V Management in the "Hyper-V Settings" on the remote server.
Credentials and Permissions: Verify that you are using the correct credentials to connect to the remote Hyper-V Server. Ensure that the account you are using has the necessary permissions to manage Hyper-V on the remote server.
Domain Membership: If the Hyper-V Manager host and the remote Hyper-V Server are in different domains, make sure that there is a trust relationship between the domains.
Update Hyper-V Integration Services: Ensure that the Integration Services on the virtual machines hosted by the remote Hyper-V Server are up-to-date.
Hyper-V Versions: Confirm that both the Hyper-V Manager and the remote Hyper-V Server are running compatible versions. Check for updates and ensure both are on the same version (e.g., Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest updates).
DNS Resolution: Make sure that the hostnames of both the Hyper-V Manager and the remote Hyper-V Server can be resolved using DNS.
After making any changes, try connecting again using Hyper-V Manager. If the issue persists, check the Event Viewer on both the Hyper-V Manager host and the remote Hyper-V Server for any error messages that might provide additional information about the problem. This will help you narrow down the root cause and further troubleshoot the connection issue.
