Changing the EnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke
registry value and making TabTip.exe
accept the change is a common requirement for various touch-enabled Windows devices. When this registry value is enabled, the on-screen keyboard (TabTip.exe) automatically pops up when you tap on a text input field.
Please note that modifying the Windows registry can be risky, and any incorrect changes can lead to system instability. Always create a backup or a system restore point before making any registry modifications.
To enable EnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke
and make TabTip.exe
accept the change, follow these steps:
Open Registry Editor:
PressWin + R
on your keyboard to open the Run dialog, typeregedit
, and press Enter. This will open the Registry Editor.Navigate to the Registry Key:
In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\1.7
If the

.Create the EnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke Value:

key, right-click on an empty area, chooseNew

. Name the new value asEnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke
.Set the Value Data:
Double-click on theEnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke
value you just created. Set theValue data
to1
to enable automatic invocation ofTabTip.exe
.Close Registry Editor:
Close the Registry Editor.Restart Explorer (Optional):
Sometimes, changes to the registry might not take effect immediately. To ensure that the changes are applied, you can restart Windows Explorer by following these steps:- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
to open the Task Manager. - In the "Processes" tab, find and select "Windows Explorer."
- Click on the "Restart" button at the bottom-right corner of the Task Manager.
- Press
Restart the Device (Optional):
If the changes still don't take effect, consider restarting your device.
After making these changes, the TabTip.exe
on-screen keyboard should automatically pop up when you tap on a text input field. If you wish to disable the automatic invocation of the on-screen keyboard in the future, you can set the EnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke
value to 0
or delete it from the registry. Remember to take appropriate precautions when modifying the registry, and proceed with caution.
